Press Release: Bands for Community Announce Second Annual Shoe Box Campaign

In conjunction with I Love First Peoples non-profit, the collective aims to collect 300 gifts for aboriginal youth this holiday season

Calgary, Alberta – Bands for Community, a local music collective, along with I Love First Peoples are having their second annual gift shoebox drive for underprivileged aboriginal youth this December. The second year of this initiative has a goal of tripling the donations from last year, with a goal of 300+ shoeboxes. The daytime event will be running at the #1 Legion downtown Calgary and is free to attend with either a packed shoebox or a donation.

Bands for Community is a group initiative that formed to organize the first shoebox fundraiser in 2016. The project was extremely successful with over 100 shoes boxes being filled with personal essentials, toys and other gifts that were dispersed in rural aboriginal communities. A large amount of donations came from local musicians and bands as well as business and individuals.

The boxes were distributed by I Love First Peoples, a nonprofit who have been active since 2013 working with disadvantaged aboriginal communities all over Canada to improve the quality of life for the youth and help provide motivation to stay in school.

There will be a multi-genre music showcase along with vendors, and other performers. The event is family friendly, all ages and runs from 2-9pm. Admission is by donation or a shoebox. Confirmed to play so far is Nikki Valentine, Iron Tusk, and Drezus. The legion is located at 116 7 Ave SE downtown Calgary.
